~ History of Edmond
Original exploration of the Edmond real estate area was conducted in 1832. When the Chisholm Trail opened up in 1867, the area became a destination for cattle ranchers and their ranch hands. This has created the exquisite horse breeding and training that Edmond is known for today. In 1886, the Santa Fe Railroad commissioned that Edmond become an official city. The government granted this request, but named it "Summit". The Santa Fe soon renamed it Edmond.
Edmond real estate was in great demand during the Oklahoma Land Rush of the late 1880s. The people involved in the great land rush became the first official settlers of the city. Edmond also became home to many of the "firsts" in the new Oklahoma Territory: first public school, first church, first library, first grocery store (operating out of a tent) and first public university. This fantastic history is part of what makes residents of Edmond so proud.
