Oklahoma City Sports

Oklahoma City has many major and minor league sports teams.  Oklahoma realtor® Gordon Wynn wants to make your Oklahoma City real estate transaction go as smoothly as possible.  Therefore, he has put together this list of some of these sports teams for the sports enthusiast.

These teams include Oklahoma City Blazers, Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, Oklahoma RedHawks, the National Women’s Football Association and Oklahoma City Lightning.  In September of 2005, the Mayor of Oklahoma City made an agreement with the owner of the New Orleans Hornets, George Shinn, to temporarily adopt the Hornets because of the loss of its home, the New Orleans Arena, due to Hurricane Katrina.  The Hornets were the first professional sports team to play their game season out of state.

The Ford Center in Downtown Oklahoma City has hosted 36 home games for the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets during 2005-2006.  There were another 35 games hosted in 2006-2007, six of the games were played in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The Hornets are scheduled to return to New Orleans for the 2007-2008 game-season.

Several touring concerts are also hosted at the Ford center along with college basketball games for the Oklahoma City University, the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, NHL exhibition games and many conventions and event.

Seattle Storm and Seattle Super Sonics of the WNBA were bought by an investment group from Oklahoma City that was headed up by Clay Bennett.  The teams are now pursuing a new arena in Renton, a Seattle suburb.  Part of the agreement was to have a deadline of October 31,2007 for King County and the state of Washington to give the approval of a new arena or the team will be able to apply for approval from the NBA to relocate.  Las Vegas is the most likely place to relocate but rumor has it that Bennett would like to move the teams to Oklahoma City, his hometown.

The new Abe Lemons Arena host games from the OCU Stars at Oklahoma City University.  The university also has one the top rowing programs in the country.  Oklahoma City University recently announced the desire to enter the NCAA in the 2007 season.  This will give Oklahoma City another opportunity for marketing the city with new city named jerseys that will be soon be available on the NCAA sports circuits.

Other sporting events that are notable include the NCAA Women's College World Series, which is played at the Hall of Fame Stadium, the World Cup of Softball, horse shows, horse races at Remington Park and a variety of events at the state fairgounds held annually.
