In the beginning, the land was a prairie with roaming tribes of Indians and bison.  The town was built years later in 1887 as coal and water station.  The station serviced the Santa Fe Railroad while rail line was being connected to Gainesville, Texas and Arkansas City, Kansas.  The area was first called Summit because of its location.  It was the highest spot between North Canadian Rivers and the Cimarron on the railroad.  In 1889, during the great Oklahoma land run, the area around Steeplechase seemed to spring up overnight.
